2015 Resuscitation Guidelines

The 2015 International Consensus on Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care Science with Treatment Recommendations (CoSTR) conference was held in Dallas from 31st Jan to 5th February 2015.

Task forces of the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR) were joined by invited experts from around the world. Selected resuscitation topics were discussed in plenary sessions while many other topics were discussed by individual task forces in breakout sessions. By the completion of the conference, draft consensus on science statements and treatment recommendations were completed for the vast majority of the ‘Population Intervention Control Outcome' (PICO) questions that had been prioritised for 2015. Most of these are available for public viewing and comment until 28th February 2015 (https://volunteer.heart.org/apps/pico/Pages/default.aspx).

The 2015 CoSTR document is now being written by the task force co-chairs and the CoSTR co-editors (Mary Fran Hazinski and Jerry Nolan) and will be published online in Resuscitation and Circulation on 15th October 2015. The writing of the 2015 European Resuscitation Council Resuscitation Guidelines will now begin and these will also be published in Resuscitation (in print and online) on 15th October 2015.

In parallel with this, course manuals and associated material will also be prepared ready for courses starting later this year.

Jerry Nolan was awarded Giant of Resuscitation by the AHA

The American Heart Association has awarded Vice-Chair of the ERC board, Jerry Nolan, the honorary title of "Giant of Resuscitation".

“As a medical student in 1982, while undertaking an elective at a community hospital in Newfoundland, Canada, I had the opportunity to become proficient in intubation. Subsequently, in the UK, as a ‘House Officer’ (intern) on the cardiac arrest team I would invariably adopt the role of airway man. At that stage in my career I had no specific interest in either anesthesia or cardiopulmonary resuscitation... Read more
